My friend(a guy) is dating another guy online he is 17 and in america the other guy is 22 in Japan. Which countries age of consent do they use? Japan is 13 (even for gay couples in Tokyo) and america is 18 in most areas.

America is not 18 in most places. 18 is the age to give or receive pornography or to be photographed nude. America is 18 in a few places, 17 in a very few (NY) and 16 in most for actual sex.
However, until they meet — it doesn’t matter — and if they meet, the nation they are in governs the age of consent.
For internet (cyber) sex — treat it as if it were porn — for that and that only, it is 18.
However, I very much doubt your friend is going to turn his lover in — and I certainly hope you aren’t.
Regards,
Reyn
No one really cares what a 17 year old does in the US, when it comes down to it, unless it’s a female who gets pregnant and the sex was involuntary. We have bigger concerns than older teens fooling around. Legally, I imagine the law applying to the 17 year old living in the US would be the one that would be applied, if anyone cared to file a complaint.
Japan I can’t say, but in the USA the age of consent varies from state to state. Google can help you check it out.
Go with whichever country they are engaging in activities in. (i.e. if they’re in the US, go with the state law, if they’re in Japan, go with theirs.)
One uses the age of the person who is the lowest in the nation with the lowest. The situation you’re asking about…if the seventeen year old goes to Japan…it’s okay. If the twenty two year old comes to the U.S. he’s going to be in LOTS of trouble…until the seventeen year old is eighteen.
Thanks for sharing the differences in Japan’s laws. It’s strange here in the United States. For instance, my grandparents were both underage, and no she wasn’t pregnant. She was 14 and my grandfather was 17. Back in the 40′s in the southern United States, it wasn’t that unusual to marry and if there was any laws in state, they didn’t carry them out.
Now in the United States they have rules for everything. What bites me is you cannot buy beer till your 21 or tobacco, but you die for our country? This seems crazy but true.
Actually 18 is a common misconception. The federal law states that it is 16. Therefore states can’t go any lower than 16 but they can go higher. I know in PA here it is 16. You would have to check on your states laws to find out what your state allows.
The thing about the 16 year old thing is, if they are still living with their parents, then their parents have a say. That’s where most people get it confused. If the parents don’t allow it, then it is therefore illegal. (I never thought I would actually have to know that part of my college studies)
As far as japan, that would be kind of difficult. As far as I know there is no international laws. So, if your friend went there it would probably be okay, but if the other guy came here, it would be up to your friends parents (unless your state says other wise). These laws tend to be hard to define, so i could be a little off, but that’s my interpretation.
