I don’t think any state has the actual divorce records online; they would probably just have an index at best. Those records are usually kept in the county where they took place and I would assume that they are too costly to scan for most of those jurisdictions unless they get a grant or some type of special funding for such a project. However, that would be the first place to check…the website for the county in which they resided in at the time of the divorce. If not living together, then the residence of the mother.
It depends on the state of where the divorce occurred. Most states have an online vital records site. Some states give access to such things as to when the divorce was filed. This does not give the actual date of the final divorce decree. I had a similar problem with researching my parents divorce. I wrote to the registry of records in the city of their divorce and got a copy of it. It cost me $10 to $15. It might be faster than trying to get it threw a website.
Ancestry has some. They are not free. I’ll look for you if you send me your parents’ names and the state they were living in via my profile. Since you are in college, you are likely aged 17 – 23, and the divorce was in the last 20 years. That in turn dims the chances; most genealogy records are older than that.
Records are spotty. You could lie and your professor could not check you, even if he/she had an ancestry subscription; you could argue the records were no there, but every year on June 23rd your dad got sloppy drunk and wailed that he never should have done it, back in 1984 / 1994 / 2004
