For Anyone Who Has Been To Provincetown, Ma – Do You Think The Town Gives A Bad Image For Gay People?

I went to Provincetown for the first time in summer during a trip to Cape Cod. I enjoyed visiting the town, there was lot’s of great shops, but I think the GLBT scene was too much. They have rainbow flags draped all over the place and there are pictures of almost naked people on the street billboards that advertise online sex websites or gay dating sites. There’s a house on the hill near the Pilgrim Monument and they had big picture of a naked guy hanging on the balcony and the guys were standing out there half naked. In a store that has a lot of political stickers displayed on the window, there was a small picture of president Bush and a caption said “International Terrorist” (which is used as an anti American slogan at anti USA protests in other countries).
I think some people there give the town a gay people a bad image. It was so stereotypical of everything gay that I was turned off. If an open minded straight person went to visit, don’t you think they would be turned off? I would think so and I think that’s disappointing.
FYI I’m a liberal bisexual (so no, I’m not a right wing fundie complaining about Ptown). Maybe living in the mostly Republican suburbs of Dallas has gone to my head, but I think they over do it in Ptown.

I live in Provincetown. This is a homosexual town and it’s the straights who are the “outsiders” here. And as far as the pictures of guys – how is that any different from all the lude pictures of females and XXX theaters in big cities where straights are prominent? In fact, nearly every magazine, billboard, TV show and movie is dripping with heterosexual sexuality. I think the problem is that, even though you claim to be bi (I don’t believe there’s any such thing, but whatever) you must still have feelings of guilt. Provincetown doesn’t flaunt homosexuality any more than any straight town flaunts their ways.

Let me pose this question to you in response…do you find it offensive in a place like, say Hollywood, where people and celebrities traipse around half naked all the time; to the store, to awards shows, where-ever and yet that is referred to as sexy and fashionable. But just because a gay person does it, it all of a sudden becomes offensive and “too much…”
IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT, DON’T LOOK.

“Maybe living in the mostly Republican suburbs of Dallas has gone to my head…..” You’re right! Ptown is a very positive place and it portrays the thought that the LGBT community is just like the rest of society. Everyone lives their lives day to day.

I purposely vacation in Provincetown each July and August (teacher schedule). I enjoy being in an environment where my peers are all gay and accepting of me, a gay male. I attend nightly parties where the action is wild and uncensored. That’s Provincetown culture.

I’m straight and have visited Provincetown several times and have not been offended. Cool place.

    Havent been there in years
But no not really, a lot of gay communities are like that, and they cater to a largely gay clientele

  • During the day I would say it is definitely NOT appropriate. I know the nights get pretty wild around there but during the day needs to be an atmosphere where families with children are comfortable. With the whale watch tours and other family oriented things going on stuff like you described shouldn’t be seen by little eyes. Rainbow flags are ok, political signs are (most of the time) explainable, even gay is explainable as long as you keep the word love in the mix but sex and the different ways people enjoy it is really tough to explain to a little kid. I live nearby and don’t go that way in the summer so I haven’t personally seen any of the nude posters and stuff you mention…
