Nigerian scammers are using photos of male models on dating websites and on sites like myspace.com to lure women into their 419scams. Unfortunately there is no way to do a search on those images for a woman to find out if the user of those images are ligit or not. Search engines need to provide search options for images only. This will help to curtail illegal use of these professional images for crime.
It’s a good idea in theory; unfortunately it’s a particularly hard problem to solve in practice.
This is because, unlike text, words and sentences, images are hard to compare to each other. If someone altered the colour slightly on an image, would that make it a different picture, or is it still the same?
Questions like that may seem obvious to a human, but computers don’t instinctively know the answers; they have to be taught by us.
There is a website, that says they can do automatic face recognition and tagging of images, which would go a long way to helping to reach the goal you described (http://www.riya.com). The ultimate goal; making sure a person is the same as the picture that they have put on the ‘net, is a lot more difficult. The scammer does not have to get a picture from the ‘net; he could scan one from a magazine, or take a picture of a random person on the street.
Herein lies the difficulty.
Sarah, Please email me back. I think I have had the same problem. I would like to find out if you have received the same pictures. Sarah, I received an email from a guy named “Kim McFarland” stating that he was from HI but doing business in Nigeria. He said that he was 49 years old. He was very handsome and was wearing a blue denim shirt. I don’t know how to get the picture to you unless you give me your email address.
I hope you get more answers to your question besides me. I, too, wish there was such a feature. I download photos off the Internet a lot, but when I try to return to the site I think I got them from (for reference, I can never seem to find them again. I almost think I would have to put the URL in with the name of the photo. It would be nice to somehow have the photo ID encrypted into the photo file so it could be traced to source. Much of the photography is copyrighted and if I would like to use it, I would like to get permission first.
I fear i have a similar problem. Though I am in Africa, but my domain is Indian (its Yahoo.co.in) and as i have been using it for years now, i do not want to change it. I fear the same thing. if you are successful post a message in the same category which will help many of us. Thanks!
