What Is The True Frost Free Date For Northern Kentucky?

The zone is 5b and 6a. The saying is don’t plant your vegetables until Mother’s Day. If you do a search online for “frost free dates’ most will give the USDA hardiness zone frost free dates. For zones 5b-6a the frost free date is April 15. Why is the saying for Mother’s Day? Why is April 15 the USDA hardiness zone’s frost free date?

I wouldn’t plant anything too early this year, especially after the harsh winter this season. It’s too cool, just wait until early May or later (a week or two after the trees are leafed out). Or plant them with a cutout plastic soda bottle, so they don’t get frost on them.
The decision also depends on your elevation; since Kentucky can be pretty hilly, I would guess starting early is safer in the lower, more sheltered elevations.

I live in Louisville, im in zone 6, I use it as a rule of thumb to not plant annuals before Mothers day or around that time anyway.
