cause people want to make money without really working hard to earn it
In short?
There are a number of people who take the anonymity of the internet as an opportunity to stir up trouble, annoy people, or just ridicule things. It is a rampant problem in most “free” areas of the internet. Making it pay limits the ability of these people and often forces them to actually identity fthemselves legitimately. This also protects the other patrons as if one patron kills another patron and buries their body, the dating site knows the name and addresses or *something* about who they referred.
Beyond any of that, like any other business, if the market will pay a price, you charge what the market will bear. Apparently, the market will pay.
